MARTIN LUTHER KING JR MEMORIAL, DC

Walking distance from the Lincoln Memorial, the MLK Jr memorial was everything and more than I could’ve expected. Its simplicity is striking, and beyond moving. The memorial is by a little lake, and you can also see the Jefferson Memorial from there.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial at the Tidal Basin in Washington, D.C., honors civil rights leader Dr. King. Dedicated on August 28, 2011, to mark the 48th anniversary of his "I Have a Dream" speech, it features a large statue of Dr. King emerging from granite, symbolizing leadership in the fight for civil rights. Designed by architect Romaldo Giurgola and sculptor Lei Yixin, the memorial emphasizes strength. Surrounding the statue are significant inscriptions of King's quotes, reminding visitors of his commitment to equality, justice, and nonviolence. Framed by a crescent stone wall with additional quotes, it encourages reflection. The site serves as a pilgrimage destination honoring Dr. King's contributions to civil rights and American history. It stands as a tribute to his legacy and a call to pursue a just society.
