JUNGFRAUJOCH 2019
WOW. 3 hours of travel each way, and absolutely worth every minute. This is a trip I booked the night before, and couldn’t have asked for better weather. On the train up there, I met two Australian women, who’d booked the trip 6 weeks earlier, and I told them how lucky we got with the weather.
You actually take a cog train up THROUGH the Eiger, there’s even a stop where you can exit the train, and look through a thick window to the south of the mountain towards a Sea of Ice.
Back on the train, through the Monch mountain, and then you arrive under the Jungfraujoch.
Up an elevator, and then THE VIEW is spectacular. There’s an ice cave you can walk through (very cold in there), and there are a number of stores (expensive).
The two Aussies and I eventually made our way to the bottom, where you can walk out on the mountain, and see the Aletsch Glacier in all its glory. There’s even a small bar, to get a drink, or just coffee/tea, and sit down to enjoy the view.
Simply an amazing day trip!
Jungfraujoch is a famous mountain pass in the Bernese Alps, at 3,454 meters (11,332 feet) above sea level, known as the "Top of Europe." It is a popular tourist destination, offering panoramic views of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau mountains. Accessed by cogwheel railway from Interlaken and Grindelwald, the train journey showcases stunning alpine scenery. At Jungfraujoch, the highest railway station in Europe, visitors can enjoy the Sphinx Observation Deck with views of the Aletsch Glacier, explore walking paths like the Ice Palace, and participate in winter sports such as skiing and snowboarding or summer hiking. The area features restaurants and shops for local cuisine and souvenirs, making it a must-visit for those exploring the Swiss Alps.
