CARLISLE AND GRETNA GREEN
Our father grew up in Carlisle, in Northern England. Some of our relatives still live there, including our cousin, Nick and his family. He took us to several sites that were important for me to see, such as the school Dad attended (first image), and the house he grew up in (second image).
It was fascinating to visit the cemetery where our ancestors are buried, and to see the head stone with all the family names.
Carlisle Castle didn’t disappoint either, nor did Carlisle Cathedral, where Dad, as a little boy, used to attend church. Of course I paid for a photography license for our visit there!
Gretna Green is right across the Scottish border from Carlisle, and we did a little shopping after listening to the Bagpiper.
Carlisle is a historic city in Cumbria, England, near the Scottish border, serving as the administrative center of the City of Carlisle district. Its history dates back to Roman times as Luguvalium, a key military base. Major landmarks include Carlisle Castle, built in the 11th century, which has historical significance during conflicts with Scotland, and the 12th-century Cathedral Church of St. Mary, known for its architecture and stained glass. Initially a wool trade center, Carlisle now features historical sites, shopping, and parks. It is also a transportation hub with railway links to major cities like Manchester and Edinburgh, surrounded by scenic views and outdoor activities in the Lake District National Park. Carlisle blends rich history with modern amenities, making it an attractive destination.
Gretna Green, a village in Scotland near the English border, is historically significant for runaway marriages during the 18th and 19th centuries. Couples sought to escape strict English marriage laws requiring church weddings and parental consent under 21. Scotland's lenient laws allowed couples to marry without such restrictions. The Old Blacksmith Shop, established in the late 1700s, became a popular secret wedding venue and is now a tourist attraction. Today, Gretna Green remains a favored wedding destination, offering various packages and venues that blend its historical roots with modern amenities.
