AVENCHES, Switzerland 2019
One of the many things I love most about Switzerland, is the train system, and public transport in general. This sleepy little town of Avenches (click on the link) is just 1.5 hours away from the Capital, Bern. The walk up from the train station is a little steep, but oh so worth it.
Have you ever seen a roman amphitheater? It’s amazing to wander through, and imagine what it must’ve been like in it’s prime.
Avenches, located in Switzerland's Vaud canton, was formerly the Roman city of Aventicum, the capital of Roman Helvetia. Positioned on a hill, it offers stunning views of the Jura mountains. The town is known for its well-preserved Roman ruins, such as an amphitheater from the 1st century AD that seated 5,000 spectators for events like gladiatorial contests. Avenches also boasts rich medieval architecture, including remnants of city walls and churches, particularly the Church of Saint-Mary. The narrow streets and quaint squares highlight its historical significance. Today, Avenches hosts cultural events, notably the annual Historical Festival, attracting history enthusiasts. It combines historical exploration with scenic beauty, making it a significant destination.
