VISITING THE CAPITOL, DC

One of the sights I really wanted to see close up on this trip, was the Capitol. It’s really a striking building, and honestly I never knew that there was a pool of water in front of it!

The United States Capitol in Washington, D.C., is the home of Congress, with a history dating back to the late 18th century. Construction began in 1793 under George Washington, featuring designs by William Thornton among others. Originally a simple rectangle with a central dome, the Capitol underwent significant renovations, most notably the replacement of the original dome with the iconic cast-iron dome completed in 1866.

The Capitol has been central to key events in American history, including presidential impeachment trials and landmark legislation, and it survived the British burning during the War of 1812. More than an architectural landmark, it represents democratic ideals, serving as a focal point for protests and celebrations. Today, it functions as the legislative center and offers public tours and educational programs.
